I know this post is a couple of days late, but the nominations for the upcoming 90th Academy Awards have been released. Click here for a list of all the nominees, but the animation-related ones are listed below:
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE:
The Boss Baby
The Breadwinner
Coco
Ferdinand
Loving Vincent
BEST ANIMATED SHORT:
Dear Basketball
Garden Party
Lou
Negative Space
Revolting Rhymes
What do you all think of these nominees, in particular? I haven’t seen The Boss Baby yet, but really? It’s Oscar-worthy? I find that very hard to believe! But, I’m so glad that Glen Keane’s Dear Basketball has made it to the list!
I will post my Oscars predictions in the next couple of weeks!
They shouldn’t have changed the voting process.
What did they change exactly, do you know?
If I got this correctly they went from having the nomination done by experts only to “opening it up” to voters who might not even have seen every movie on the shortlist. Which explains Boss Baby and Ferdinand making the list. They have no business to be there.
I find it astonishing that The Boss Baby was nominated. I agree with Swanpride above that it has no business to be there. It received mixed to negative reviews and only some audience loved it. But, if we go with that “audience-love” principle, then dozens of animations should have been nominated for an Oscar in previous years. I also find Ferdinand to be a problematic nominee. In my view, these two should have been set aside for some Japanese animations to shine.
On a positive note, I am rooting for Coco to win and am super glad that The Breadwinner is up there among the nominees.
I haven’t seen either of those two films yet, but based on what I’ve read so far, I think I can definitely agree with you guys.
I was hoping for a Capt. Underpants nomination myself.
