2015 D23 Expo Animation News!

d232015

Well, it’s that time of year: the time when Disney fans have their own personal convention, the D23, every two years. We’ve got a whole bunch of news/info regarding Disney’s upcoming animated films as well as the upcoming Pixar films, so I’ll do my best to summarize them below. Let’s begin!

UPCOMING ANIMATED DISNEY CANON FILMS

1) Zootopia (March 4, 2016)

zootopia

We already know a bit about this film being directed by Rich Moore (Wreck-It Ralph) and Byron Howard (Bolt, Tangled). It’s a world of anthropomorphic animals in which a bunny cop, voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin, must work together with a scam-artist fox, voiced by Jason Bateman, to solve a mystery. I posted the teaser trailer on my blog before and you can find it here.

It also looks like Alan Tudyk (who has voiced a character in every Disney Canon film since Wreck-It Ralph) will be voicing a character in this film too as well as actress Katie Lowes. We also know that the singer, Shakira, will be lending her voice (including her singing voice) to a gazelle in the film.

2) Moana (November 23, 2016)

Set around the Polynesian culture, this film will be about a young girl, Moana, who dreams of adventure. Her father disapproves of this, but her grandmother is more encouraging and tells her stories of the demi-god, Maui, voiced by Dwayne Johnson.

The film’s music will be done by Opetaia Foa’i, Mark Mancina, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The film will be directed by Disney legends Ron Clements and John Musker (The Great Mouse Detective, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, Treasure Planet, The Princess and the Frog).

3) Gigantic (March 9, 2018)

gigantic

Previously entitled, Giants, this film will be a take on the Jack and the Beanstalk story. Set in Spain during the Age of Exploration, we’ll see Jack climb his beanstalk and discover the world of the giants above. He’ll meet a gigantic 11 year-old girl named Ima who is lost. He agrees to help her find her way home and the rest is pretty much an adventure.

The film’s music will be done by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (Winnie the Pooh, Frozen) and the film will be directed by Nathan Greno (Tangled).

UPCOMING PIXAR FILMS

1) Finding Dory (June 17, 2016)

Directed by Andrew Stanton (A Bug’s Life, Finding Nemo, WALL-E, John Carter), the film will focus on Dory getting memories back of her childhood and going on a journey to find her family. On the way, she meets a white beluga whale, a whale shark, and an octopus. Kaitlin Olson and Ed O’Neill have joined the voice cast which already includes Idris Elba, Ty Burrell, Willem Dafoe, Eugene Levy, Diane Keaton, Albert Brooks, and Ellen DeGeneres.

2) Toy Story 4 (June 16, 2017)

Directed by John Lasseter (Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2, Cars, Cars 2), we knew that this fourth film would have been a love story of sorts. We now know that the love story will focus on Woody and Bo-Peep. So, will this be a prequel since Bo-Peep was absent during the events of Toy Story 3? We’re not sure yet.

3) Coco (November 22, 2017)

Pixar had long said that they were making an animated film based on the Día de los Muertos holiday. We now finally have confirmation of the film being in production as well as its title being Coco. The film will be about a 12 year-old boy named Miguel who has found himself in the realm of the dead.

The film will be directed by Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, Toy Story 3). We’ve seen this holiday being tackled in animation already by Reel FX Creative Studios in 2014 with the film, The Book of Life. We wonder how Pixar’s film will differ.

4) Cars 3

And that’s pretty much what sums up the animation news that D23 has given us so far. Which films are you looking forward to?
