Even a global pandemic and the fact that most movie theaters were closed last year won’t stop the Academy Awards from happening! The 93rd Academy Award nominations have been announced and I’ll post my predictions soon. Until then, here are the animation-related nominees:
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM:
Onward
Over the Moon
A Shaun the Sheep: Farmageddon
Soul
Wolfwalkers
BEST ANIMATED SHORT FILM:
Burrow
Genius Loci
If Anything Happens I Love You
Opera
Yes-People
Pixar’s Soul also scored Best Original Score and Best Sound nominations.
What do you think of the nominations this year? Let me know in the comments below!
Wow, what a competition! I was highly impressed with “Over the Moon,” “Wolfwalkers,” and “Soul.” “Onward” was good, but not great, in my opinion. The stop-motion films have done well in the past, so that could favor “Shaun the Sheep” (which I haven’t seen).
I’m predicting a win for either “Soul” or “Over the Moon” primarily for their focus on minority groups and their attention to detail in their portrayal of those cultures. “Wolfwalkers” was also amazing in its portrayal of a Celtic legend but… Euro-centric, ya know? Also, I don’t think any of this is a bad thing. I think minority/POC stories need as much publicity as possible to get people interested in seeing them.
Over the Moon impressed me a lot too! Soul, as well, but not to that extent. I haven’t seen Wolfwalker yet. I agree with you that Onward wasn’t great and I really didn’t like the Shaun the Sheep sequel. I felt it was a huge letdown from the first film.
I feel the prize will be between Soul and Wolfwalkers.
Justice League Dark Apokolips War should have been nominated.
Superman: Red Son should have been nominated for something for making all the viewers root against Batman, while simultaneously knowing that Russian murderous terrorist Batman is the best part of the movie.
I dunno if the Academy has ever nominated direct-to-video films before.
Just about everything from this year was released direct-to-streaming, which is basically DTV.
I think the Academy makes a distinction between the two, but earlier in my life, I would definitely agree with you that both are basically the same. My views have changed a bit since then.
I look forward to your predictions! I think you know I loved Soul, so I’d love to see that pull out a few wins.
Thanks, yeah I gotta get working on my predictions.
Personally I’m rooting for Wolfwalkers, since Cartoon Saloon gets nominated for every film they put out and still haven’t won. I haven’t seen Soul yet but it’s on my list; I’m sure it’s wonderful, but Pixar have won plenty of times already. (I know Soul is going to get it, but I can dream).
Yeah it would be nice if Wolfwalkers got it, but I doubt it will.
