‘Big Hero 6’ Proves to Be a Hero at the Box Office!

Disney’s 54th film in their animated Canon, Big Hero 6, has proven to be a hero at the box office by not only topping the weekend box office, but becoming the 2nd highest opening weekend for an animated Disney film with $56 million!

Have you seen the film? How was it? How was it compared to Frozen, Wreck-It Ralph, and Tangled? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I saw it, it’s pretty good, though I don’t think it’s the best thing Disney has done, but for their first animated superhero movie, it’s not too bad. It’s alot of fun, the animation is really good, and Baymax is amazing, and the heros themselves are great and very likeable, it has flaws, mostly to do on where the third act goes, and I was VERY disappointed with how the villain turned out.

  2. I really liked it! I wouldn’t put it in my Top 10, but it would probably be in Top 20. It was a bit rushed at parts, and only the main characters got enough time to shine but other than that, yeah, pretty good.
As an Asian, I’m really glad that this film is doing good (:

  3. I saw it, and it was good, but I think it’s overhyped by some people – I have friends saying it was the best Disney movie they’ve ever seen. All the ones you mentioned (Frozen, Tangled, Wreck it Ralph) I enjoyed more. It has one really fantastic loveable character, but the rest of the movie is a bit predictable/cookie cutter super hero movie. I’m working on a review for my blog now.

  4. I kinda agree with everyone else here. I liked it. It was good. It just wasn’t AMAZING. I’m in no way shape or form familiar with the comics, so from a “newbie” perspective, I thought it was a solid effort for Disney’s first Comic book movie. At the same time, it never really felt like a Disney movie to me because of this fact. Baymax was awesome (and personally the only thing that made it feel “Disney” for me), and I thought Hiro was well done. The rest of the characters didn’t get a ton of time, but I’m hoping that’s going to get expanded on if (when) they do a sequel.

Not in my top 10 by a long shot, but still a movie I would enjoy watching again. It may improve on repeat watching, actually.

  5. I really enjoyed it and glad to see it doing so well. I liked that Disney was doing an urban cityscape. It has been since Oliver and Company that they have done that . It was just different and sweet and for a person who isn’t normally a superhero movie fan I really liked it.

      1. They are so different it is tough to compare. I liked them both and it was nice to see 2 brothers bonding here where Frozen had 2 sisters, so in that way they are similar.

But I think both are very good. I like this better than Wreck it Ralph.

  6. I absolutely loved this movie! I really enjoyed Frozen as well, but there was something so refreshingly unique about Big Hero 6, that I’d rate it a hair above Frozen just because. I haven’t seen Wreck-It Ralph and Tangled yet, but I still get the feeling I’d enjoy it just a bit more, still. So glad for the success of this movie. It really is a treat, and it’s one of my favorites of the year! 🙂

    1. Cool,
If you’re interested in doing an animation project, I’d suggest watching all the 54 films in the animated Disney Canon from ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ to ‘Big Hero 6’. It’ll be a fun and interesting project and you can check off those films from your list of ones to see.

      1. That’s a great idea! Definitely one for the future for me, since I have a lot going on right now. But I’ll definitely keep it in mind. I know I have seen several of the older ones, but I have no problem revisiting them since there are so many good ones out there!

      2. I’m actually doing that for my blog right now 🙂 Definitely recommended, and we’re watching them in order so it’s really cool to see the progression of the movies and the company! It’s a little slow going but we’ll get there 🙂

  7. I enjoyed the movie but have to agree with a few people on this not being the best pixar/disney movie. The animation was very well done but the story wasn’t any different compared to any of the other marvel movies or superhero cliches. I did enjoy a lot of the easter eggs and the ending credits design and i truly believe this movie will be nominated on the top list for the Annies, Golden Globes and Oscars. I don’t see this movie winning overall though. The Lego movie, song of the sea and princess kaguya have been huge standouts and I’m hoping 2D animations such as song of the sea and the tale of the princess kaguya get more credit than they deserve because of the recent budget fixing scandal on certain animation companies and them wanting to cut 2D animation out of future productions.

      1. I don’t think How to train your dragon 2 will be a strong contender. It didn’t do as well at the box office. I can see the lego movie, big hero 6, book of life, princess kaguya and song of the sea as top list nominees but how to train your dragon 2 i can’t see being a top choice to win the category.

      2. Didn’t realize it made more money than Rio2 and The Lego Movie. I enjoyed the film but i can’t see the movie winning the overall category. Have you seen the animation short contenders as well?

      3. Both were very well done. Congrats, HTTYD2 was a final contender for the GOlden Globes. Sadly, Song of the sea and the tale of princess kaguya did not make the final list :/
