My Top 13 Least Favorite Animated Disney (Canon) Films!

For as long as I’ve had this blog, I’ve never posted a list of my top 13 least favorite Disney Canon films! So I feel it’s time to amend that, especially after having recently rewatched the Disney Canon.

So sit back and relax for my Top 13 Least Favorite Animated Disney (Canon) Films list!

#13: WINNIE THE POOH (2011)

My biggest issue with this film is the similarities it shares with Pooh’s Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin. I’m a huge fan of Pooh’s Grand Adventure; it’s my favorite Winnie the Pooh film actually and way superior, in my opinion, than the 2011 film!

There are a lot of songs in this film written by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, none of which are particularly good, in my opinion. It’s also hard to get used to some of the voices in this film. Craig Ferguson as Owl? Tom Kenny as Rabbit? I keep hearing a SpongeBob trying to come out! Also Owl’s and Rabbit’s personalities seem mixed together which just seems like sloppy writing to me.

#12: THE EMPEROR’S NEW GROOVE (2000)

I don’t hate this film, but it’s definitely not as funny as I remembered or as funny as everyone seems to praise it for. Yes, the Kronk scenes are by far the best parts of the film, but he’s not the main focus of the film.

I do enjoy the great voice acting and smooth animation in this film though. But, I wish the original idea of this film, Kingdom of the Sun, had actually come to fruition as it would have been a way better film!

#11: LILO & STITCH (2002)

My whole life, I’ve never been a big fan of this one as much as others have. Some people consider this their favorite Disney film of all time and I’m not sure why!

Maybe I’m just not that into Stitch as a character and find him annoying rather than cute. Maybe I’m just not into the other aliens. Maybe I wanted more of a loving, amicable, sisterly relationship between Nani and Lilo, even though people said their relationship was a more believable one. I’m an only child, so I wouldn’t know. But whatever the reason, I just can’t fall in love with this movie.

#10: FUN AND FANCY FREE (1947)

This one was better than I remembered, but honestly a few of the package films are on this list mostly because they are package films. Had they been full-length films comprising only one story, they would have been higher.

This one, in particular, had a few good songs in it, but the Bongo segment drags a bit. I did enjoy the Mickey and the Beanstalk segment and the Edgar Bergen scenes were fun though!

#9: THE THREE CABALLEROS (1945)

This one is much more enjoyable than its predecessor, Saludos Amigos. I loved all the animated segments, but the live-action segments dragged and were boring to me.

#8: SALUDOS AMIGOS (1943)

While not a bad film, this film is very documentary-like and has a couple of forgettable segments. I do like the Pedro and El Gaucho Goofy segments though.

#7: CHICKEN LITTLE (2005)

While I don’t hate this movie, it definitely has a very odd story and doesn’t really have anything worth praising. Well, I do enjoy the One Little Slip song, but that’s about it. While this film is quite bad, but not annoyingly or offensively so. It’s what you expect from this movie.

#6: RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET (2018)

This is the first film on the list that I genuinely dislike! Firstly, I don’t really understand the moral of clingy friends; is that even a moral? It felt so odd to me. I also thought the other message of the film (doing what you want to do) contradicted the first film’s message (everyone has an importance in their own story and place in life). It reminds me of how the message of Toy Story 4 pretty much retconned the message of Toy Story 2!

I also didn’t like how the Disney Princesses were portrayed; I don’t wanna see Cinderella brandishing a glass slipper to cut someone! And since the film is very heavily Internet-based, some parts of the film will be very dated soon, if they haven’t been already. I feel this would have worked better as a short rather than a full-length film.

#5: FROZEN II (2019)

I feel this story was just very complicated and not well-fleshed out. I feel having both spirits as well as the Northuldra in the film was problematic and overcomplicated things. They should have only had one or the other. It feels that this film was made just to make money! And the fact that there are both a Frozen III and Frozen IV in the works just makes me sad.

Did I like anything about this film? Well, the water animation was really nice. And I loved two of the songs in this film: Into the Unknown and Lost in the Woods! I think they’re better than the entire original Frozen soundtrack! But, it’s not enough to ignore the story problems!

#4: MELODY TIME (1948)

Again, this one is mostly here because it’s a package film. I like a few segments like Pecos Bill, Little Toot, and The Legend of Johnny Appleseed, but the overall offering is not very interesting and the difference in lengths of each segment is noticeable.

#3: FANTASIA (1940)

I was infamous for having considered this my least favorite Disney Canon film for years because it bored me to death! Having rewatched it in the past year, I was still bored and waiting for it to end, but I didn’t have as much hatred for it as I did when I was younger. However, it’s definitely still not for me. The only segment I really like is the The Sorcerer’s Apprentice segment.

#2: STRANGE WORLD (2022)

I have a headcanon that Disney made both this film (as well as my #1 pick) because they heard that Fantasia was my least favorite Disney Canon film and they wanted to change that, lol!

What’s there to say about Strange World? The story is weak and uninteresting, the characters are uninteresting, the animation feels lackluster, the worldbuilding feels like an oversight, etc. There was nothing about this film that I enjoyed.

AND MY #1 LEAST FAVORITE ANIMATED DISNEY (CANON) FILM IS:

WISH (2023)

Oh boy, oh boy, this film. For my more in-depth thoughts on it, check out my review of it here. But summing up, this film was just so disappointing in so many ways. The story was incredibly weak, the songs had some of the most horrible lyrics I’ve ever heard and were too pop-y for my liking, the film sucked as a tribute to Disney’s 100th, the animation looked unfinished, etc. This is a movie I WISH had never been made!

And that’s my list! Let me know which ones you agree with me on and which ones are hot takes of mine!

  1. My thoughts:

I wish you luck in avoiding the wrath of Lilo & Stitch fans.

I think your top 2 are solid because Strange World and Wish were really low points for the studio.

This list has me wondering, did you enjoy The Black Cauldron?

    1. Yes, I think Lilo & Stitch will be the biggest hot take on this list.

I actually did enjoy The Black Cauldron enough. I really don’t think it’s that bad of a film. Yes, it’s messy and needs reworking, but it didn’t bore or annoy or frustrate me like these did.

      1. The Black Cauldron has a big fan base plus some really great-looking animation so I’m not shocked by anyone liking it. Although I wish I liked it more because I am huge on castles, dragons, swords and high fantasy so you would think this would appeal to me.

  2. Nice list! I can get behind most of these, but I must admit, seeing Lilo and Emperor this low is painful (but then again, my lower rankings include Alice, Robin Hood and Robinsons – and I have Dinosaur above Frozen! So I have no room to talk haha)
