My Thoughts: TURNING RED (2022)

Sigh…the more I think about this film, the more I hate it! Sorry, you can already tell that this is going to be a negative review.

Pixar’s 25th film, Turning Red, was the third Pixar film in a row to be released on Disney+ instead of theaters. At first, I wasn’t supportive of this decision, but after seeing this film, I think it was the right thing to do. Without further ado, let’s take a look at Turning Red!

Warning: There will be spoilers ahead!

94th Academy Awards Results!

Alas, the 94th Academy Awards have ended and the biggest takeaway rom it is when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock after Chris made a joke about Jada’s hair loss. Besides that, the ceremony wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, although I really hated how they ruined the We Don’t Talk About Bruno performance (and why did they perform it anyway?).

My score this year was 16/23 which is my second-best score! In terms of animation, Encanto won Best Animated Feature and The Windshield Wiper won Best Animated Short.

My Thoughts: SCOOB! (2020)

As one of my favorite franchises ever, you can imagine how excited I was when they announced an animated Scooby-Doo film coming to theaters! Yes, we’ve had multiple animated direct-to-video Scooby-Doo films before, but never one that was intended for theatrical release or theatrical quality. I wasn’t too fond about Dax Shepard being involved in the writing and directing, but the fact that it was intended to be the first film in a Hanna-Barbera cinematic universe completely had me stoked!

Fast-forward through COVID-19 and Scoob! would no longer be released to theaters and would instead go directly to streaming. (It would later get a brief weekend theatrical release in North America in 2021, but that was it.) Did the film live up to my expectations? Read on to find out!

Caution: there will be spoilers ahead!

My Thoughts: ENCANTO (2021)

I’m always excited when a new film in the animated Disney Canon is released! It’s such a grand event for me!

“Oh yeah? Then where’s your review of Raya and the Last Dragon? HUH?”

But it’s even a grander event when the film is a milestone number in the Disney Canon! I remember the hype when Tangled was released as it was the 50th film in the Disney Canon. Fast-forward ten films and we’ve arrived at the 60th film in the Disney Canon, Encanto! What do I think of it? Read on to find out!

Actress Joan Copeland Dies at 99

The actress, Joan Copeland, has sadly passed away at the age of 99, a few months before her 100th birthday. Ms. Copeland (1922-2022) was the sister of the playwright, Arthur Miller, and made her film debut in 1958. In terms of animation, she was the voice of Tanana in Disney’s Brother Bear.

My Thoughts: RON’S GONE WRONG (2021)

It’s always exciting when a brand-new animation studio enters the market! So when the newly-founded Locksmith Animation announced their first film, Ron’s Gone Wrong, I was legitimately excited to check it out! What did I think of it? Read on to find out!

Upcoming Animated Films in 2022

2022 already? I think we can all agree that while 2020 never seemed that it would end, 2021 just zoomed by us! Maybe it was a better year than 2020, maybe it was more of the same, but whatever the case may be, it’s nearing its end.

We hope that 2022 will be an even better year for us and hopefully we can be free of this pandemic that we’re in! Good thing we have films (animated films, in particular) to keep us occupied. Let’s take a look at the upcoming animated films set to be released in 2022.

Keep in mind that I’ll only be mentioning films with set (US) release dates and that I won’t be mentioning any live-action/animated hybrid films. Also because the pandemic has shown us that streaming is pretty much a reality that’s not going away anytime soon, I will be including animated films debuting on streaming services as well.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy this list with me!

My Thoughts: LUCA (2021)

Luca would be the second Pixar film after Soul that would debut on Disney+ rather than being released theatrically due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Should this have been theatrically released though? Read on for my thoughts on the film!

Mild spoilers ahead!

Voice Actor Val Bettin Dies at 97

(UPDATED 11/14/21: His death has since been confirmed and even his Wikipedia page has been edited.)

Apparently, the voice actor, Val Bettin, has sadly passed away at the age of 97. I say “apparently” because no news stories picked up his passing even though it happened on January 7, 2021. The only evidences that seem to confirm his passing are his Star Tiger page and his FindAGrave page.

Mr. Bettin (1923-2021) most famously provided the voice of Dr. Dawson in Disney’s The Great Mouse Detective as well as the voice of the Sultan in Disney’s Aladdin sequels and television series. He shall be missed!
